Kathleen darling ... Jack Earl's voyage around the world 1947-48

During the 1930's Sydney artist Jack Earl held a dream to sail around the world. In 1947 he finally set out with four other crew in his ketch Kathleen Gillett (after his wife who remained in Australia). After eighteen months sailing and visiting exotic locations they returned to Sydney Harbour on 7 December 1948, sixty years ago. Kathleen Gillett is now part of the Australian National Maritime Museum's historic fleet.

They sailed north around the top of Australia, across the Indian Ocean to Cape Town, crossed the South Atlantic to Panama, then sailed home across the Pacific. Jack kept a log of their adventures addressed to Kathleen, profusely illustrated with sketches and photographs taken on board. First mate Mick (Lyell) Morris wrote a series of articles, illustrated by Jack, which were published at home in Seacraft magazine. In an era before air travel the voyage was exotic and captured the public imagination. Kathleen darling features photographs of their experiences - meeting the movie star Errol Flynn, sailing through the Panama Canal, watching seals in the Galapagos Islands. It includes Jack's portraits of the two Kathleens in his life - his wife, and their boat.

Kathleen Gillett was based on a design by Norwegian Colin Archer. The boat, restored to its 1940s configuration, was a Bicentennial Gift to Australia from the Government of Norway. It is part of the National Maritime Collection and can be seen at the Museum's wharves.
